Word Building Exercise

You can easily improve your vocabulary and English altogether. The point of word games is that you are given a few letters as clues, and you can fill up the other letters. There are many variations of these games all of which require you to remember words and recall them at a moment’s notice.

It is incredibly hard at first, but as you play for a while, you will notice that it gets simply. And your vocabulary wider.

Change Your Phone’s Language

We all use the language we can easily understand. For most people it is English. But not for someone learning English as their second language. Perhaps you have French as your phone’s default language. Or maybe it is in Spanish.

But if you want to get used to working with English, you may consider changing the default language for your phone to English. It might seem complicated at first, and even difficult. But it gets easier. Soon you will automatically understand every notification that comes to your phone. It is just a little trick, but it can put you in the English mood and help you learn English faster.

Labelling Things

Another easy trick is labelling things. In your house or office. So, you have labels on the tables, chairs, desks, even the items in your kitchen. Every time you pass your labelled items, you will read the labels. Soon you won’t need to read them, you will just know. And one day you will remove the labels because now you know what they are called without any difficulty.

A Morning Routine

Another helpful tip is to start your day with an English exercise. Adding English to your morning or evening routine could make it easier to assimilate the language. For instance, a short story that you can read in less than 15 minutes. Or maybe a “Word-of-the-Day” kind of morning, where you learn a new word every day.

You can take this a step further by using the word you have learnt throughout the day in sentences. Of course, some words are going to be harder than others, using them may be difficult. But as long as you understand the word and how to use it, you are on the right track.

Reading English News

One easy way of improving your English is reading English news. One thing about reading the news is the variety or news, stories and the columns. Every piece is usually written by a different author. Therefore, you get a variety of different word usage and nuances. It is in written form, but it does give you an idea of real- human conversations. Not to mention that reading a new language helps you solidly get a grip on the language.

A general tip is to make all these tips a habit. Nothing comes easy. But consistency helps make it easier. You know it will eventually pay off and you will speak and write much better.

When you have the easy stuff down to a routine, we can now consider some medium level tips to use.

2. Medium Level Tips

These medium level tips will be practical ways to integrate English to your everyday use. These tips are good at ensuring you get used to using English more adeptly.

Reading English Books

We know that so far, you have been reading short stories. Maybe very easy stories of about 300 words or less. Books, even children’s books, are another matter entirely. The words will be much bigger. The sentences longer and more complex. It will take constant reading for you to get better. We advise that you start with simple children’s books and progress further. When you find that you can read a small novel from start to finish without stumbling over words, it is time to pick up a much more complex book. Write down or underline words you didn’t understand and look them up in the dictionary later. Or if you prefer, look them up immediately to better understand how they are used.

No book is just words put together. It includes prose, dialogues, use of questions, idioms, and expressions unique to each author. You will be getting a better glance of the English language in just one material.

Watching TV Shows

Now this is going to be a little complicated. It is conversations, spoken at the usual speed.  But the dialogues, gestures used, and every scene that features human conversations will help you learn to associate gesture with various emotions. These shows will also help you get used to the ring of words spoken out loud and going further to familiarise the English language to you.

Plus, it is entertaining. We do recommend that at first, watch the English shows using English subtitles as you can see a word and how it is pronunciation spoken form. After, when you get comfortable, consider watching them without subtitles and rely on your hearing and understanding to get what is going on.

Keeping a Journal

The praises for keeping a journal have been sang for years now. It is a good way of working over your experiences on the daily. And you as an English learner, keeping a journal will have an added benefit – Wring in English.

The more you get used to writing in the new language, the better you get the concepts of written English. You will get used to English sentence construction, paragraphing, and most importantly, English punctuations.

So, get to writing down your thoughts. You will get better at forming better sentences and expanding your vocabulary at the same time.

A pro tip is to gradually advance your efforts. If you take up all these at the same time, before you got better at it, it would all feel very overwhelming. You want to get better, not turn yourself from the English language. So, when you get better at reading simple books, you progress further. When you can get writing simple shopping lists, you start writing longer texts in your journal.

Now we look at the hard level which includes complete immersion in the English language.

3. Hard Level

We know it says hard, but of course by the time you get to this point, it would seem very easy to you. These tips aim at fully integrating English into your routine and daily life. At this point you are using English more and more in conversations and correspondence with others.

English Only Days

You might consider using only English on some days. With time, you increase the regularity of how often you have these English only days. You could start with two days and increase whenever you feel comfortable to more days. This helps take you the foreign feel of using English.

English Speaking Community

A community offers the excellent support system you will need in learning and adopting English language. Additionally, if there are other learners in the group, you get to ask for ways to improve your English. This community does not have to people close to you, with online forums available, consider joining one. You will learn from them and make some new friends. What’s more, you will have engaging conversations with native speakers. Everyone stumbles over different concepts of English language, so who knows how you can all helps each other?

Letter Writing

Finally, you can gather your newfound English fluency and write letter to people from around the global. It does not have to be physical letters; we now have emails and social media apps that can be used to communicate with others. The objective is to keep using English as your language of choice until you are fluent in it.

Think if these tips as a new adventure. You are not just learning about the concepts in class. You will be practising them. Consider each a step toward proficiency in the English language.
